EXPANDING WATERFRONT PUBLIC SPACE:
LETTERS OF SUPPORT

From Statewide Organizations:

"Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Environment Council of Rhode Island:

Endorses FIPP’s vision for expanding the Park, specifically including its efforts to extend the waterfront area open to the public; and Opposes any plans to build large scale parking, residential, commercial, or other facilities in or adjacent to the existing Park or anywhere along the Fox’s Point waterfront south of the new Route 195."

Environment Council of Rhode Island "Save the Bay shares with FIPP the value of maintaining and expanding public access to Narragansett Bay and its rivers, especially in urban areas. "Preserving and expanding public use of India Point Park is also vitally important in light of the Interstate 195 relocation project. The City and State have a tremendous opportunity to link the downtown riverwalk with India Point Park, and create a seamless greenway and bikepath that links surrounding communities."

Topher Hamblett, Director of Advocacy
Save the Bay

"…the Greenways Alliance of Rhode Island (GARI) supports the mission of the Friends of India Point Park to preserve the integrity of the Park as a green space and gathering place for all on the Providence waterfront."
Sue Barker, State Chair
Greenways Alliance of Rhode Island

From Providence-Based Organizations:

"To create a continuous waterfront park by expanding India Point Park and connecting it with the extended riverwalks at Fox’s Point would result in even greater renown for the City of Providence as a wonderfully scenic and visitor-friendly city. "It would be counterproductive to allow any large-scale commercial development at what is now a public park at India Pont and lose any of the beauty and charm that is fostering the current revitalization of Providence."
Mark Davis, CEO
Heritage Harbor Museum

"Keeping the waterfront south of I-195 open will preserve the only bay shoreline in the city accessible to the public. This will counteract congestion, noise, fumes, and disruption of invaluable parkland from the relocation of I-195. "WaterFire Providence…would benefit from a continuous waterfront park, enabling visitors to approach the event from India Point and the ferry landing. I fully endorse the efforts of the Friends of India Point Park to preserve and expand this important Providence park."

Barnaby Evans, Creator
WaterFire Providence

"…the board voted unanimously to endorse the vision statement of the Friends of India Point Park. We applaud your ambition and your commitment to make the park a showplace for Providence."
Catherine Horsey, Executive Director
Providence Preservation Society

"India Point Park is a vital oasis for our community….Friends of India Point Park’s vision for expanding the park to meet the riverwalks at Fox’s Point and limiting waterfront development is one we share and will work with you to promote. Comprehensive planning is needed now if India Point Park is to fulfill its glorious potential as a premier waterfront resource for all Rhode Islanders."
Harry Bilodeau, President
Fox Point Citizens Association

"Providence has the opportunity to become renowned for its urban parks…Friends of India Point Park is to be congratulated for taking a leadership role in safeguarding the land around the waterfront…In many cities…hasty development has created barriers that will forever diminish the ability of residents and visitors to truly enjoy the waterfront.
